Miami Waived/Injured Former Gators WR
Miami waived/injured former Florida Gators wide receiver Freddie Swain on Sunday. In a corresponding move, the Dolphins signed defensive back Jamal Perry.
According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, Swain is currently dealing with a "slight" hamstring pull that is expected to sideline him for about a week.
However, if Swain is to go through waivers unclaimed, he will revert to the Dolphins' injured reserve. He could be activated following four games, or the two sides could negotiate a release with an injury settlement.
Following Swain's waiving and Perry's signing, Miami also waived/injured defensive back Mark Gilbert and signed wide receiver Keke Coutee.
From nearby Ocala, Fla., Swain joined Florida in the recruiting class of 2016 and went on to enjoy a productive career in pass-catching and special teams roles with the Gators.
Swain hauled in 68 receptions for 996 yards and 15 touchdowns across four years, with single-season career-highs of 38 catches for 517 yards and seven touchdowns in 2019 with Kyle Trask as his quarterback. Swain also averaged 7.9 yards per punt return across 39 attempts, returning one for a touchdown in 2018.
The Seattle Seahawks selected Swain in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. He was one of three Florida receivers picked that year, following Van Jefferson (Los Angeles Rams, second round) and before Tyrie Cleveland (Denver Broncos, seventh round).
Swain spent two seasons with the Seahawks and cracked the starting lineup at receiver for eight games in 2021. He caught 38 passes for 502 years and six touchdowns over 33 appearances, before a preseason release in 2022.
Swain spent most of the 2022 season on Miami's practice squad, but signed to Denver's active in December and appeared in three games. The Broncos waived Swain in March, leading to his return to the Dolphins this offseason.
