Gators Umanmielen Labeled East-West Shrine Bowl Breakout Player of the Week
Florida edge rusher Princely Umanmielen was announced as the East-West Shrine Bowl's Breakout Player of the Week following his performance against Vanderbilt on Saturday.
Umanmielen finished the contest with two tackles and four quarterback hurries to aid the Gators to the 38-14 victory over the Commodores, creating immense pressure on Ken Seals and Co. to help Austin Armstrong's defense stifle the Vandy offense consistently throughout the day.
He was the second-highest graded defender for the Gators per Pro Football Focus on the day.Β He bolsters his season-long stat total to 14 tackles, two sacks, eight quarterback hits and 15 quarterback hurries, earning his keep after stepping into the starting JACK edge rusher spot this offseason.
Umanmielen's impressive bend around the edge and nose for the quarterback earned him considerable buzz this offseason regarding the elevation of his draft stock if he could translate those skills to the gridiron this fall.
Despite only posting two sacks, he's capitalized on his opportunities thus far by generating consistent pressure on pass-rushing downs, as exemplified by his team-leading quarterback hurry and hit marks through six weeks.
Umanmielen will look to maintain his high level of play and aid the Gators to avoid another sluggish road appearance when Florida takes on Spencer Rattler and the South Carolina Gamecocks in Columbia, S.C., in Week 7.
