Jeawon Taylor is getting too many reps

Shawn Davis has impressed. Brad Stewart has been solid. Donovan Stiner has been serviceable. Jeawon Taylor is none of the above.

Florida safety Jeawon Taylor lined up eight yards off of the line of the scrimmage. Miami had the ball at UF's 25-yard line, threatening to score. Taylor vacated as soon as the ball was snapped to get into coverage position.

He saw UM tight end Brevin Jordan line up attached to the offensive line on the right side and then sprint down the field to the opposite hash immediately. Taylor not only allowed Jordan to make the catch untouched, but displayed an abysmal attempt to tackle him. Jordan ran right over Taylor as if he wasn't even there and walked into the end zone.

That play pretty accurately describes Taylor's season when he has played. Taylor totaled eight tackles in the Peach Bowl to conclude last season against Michigan In three games of action this season (did not play against UT Martin), he has the same number of tackles.

Perhaps more than the number itself, is the eye test. Taylor takes ineffective angles in the open field. That's one of the worst traits to possibly have as a safety. As a defensive lineman or a linebacker, if you take a bad angle you in all likelihood have help around you. If a safety needs to make a tackle, that means the ball carrier has space and if you miss, it means a good play becomes a highlight play in the game.

The guy he splits snaps with, Shawn Davis, has 14 tackles up to this point in the season. Shawn Davis takes way better angles. Shawn Davis brings the ball carrier down at all costs. Shawn Davis looks like he wants to make the play.

Also, Davis has two interceptions on the year. Taylor has no interceptions and no pass break ups in 2019.

Yet, Taylor still gets valuable reps. I honestly do not understand why. Granted, Davis has seen way more snaps ever since Miami and he seemingly gets more every game. I also understand that Davis can't play every down. Safety is a position that has to have some sort of rotation. Against really good teams, however, Davis needs to play as many snaps as humanly possible.

Taylor against Georgia or Auburn's running game should not be a comforting thought for Florida fans. If he gets a significant amount of snaps against those teams, or LSU, I don't see the Gators winning those games.
