Sumner High safety Gregory Smith III will need an extra week to mull over his options before choosing a collegiate home.

On Tuesday, the Gators' safety target elected to push back his commitment, previously scheduled for Wednesday, to Early Signing Day on Dec. 20. Smith will choose from six formerly named schools: Florida, Ole Miss, Toldeo Vanderbilt, Virginia and USF.

"After conversing with my family, I've decided to push my commitment day to December 20th, which is also signing day!!" Smith said in a post to X, formerly known as Twitter.

Smith's seen a late surge in his recruitment process after factoring into the safety rotation for the first time during this senior year after serving primarily at quarterback throughout his prep career.

Standing at 6-foot-4, 200 pounds, the Riverview, Fla., native possesses a promising frame with accompanying length, speed and functional ball skills to align as a wide-ranging backend prospect. From a stature standpoint, he can be likened to freshman safety Jordan Castell, who started for Florida in 11 contests in 2023.

The size aided Smith in his acclimation to the defensive side of the ball for his senior year, accounting for 29 tackles, one for loss, four pass breakups, one interception and a fumble recovery.

The Gators have been widely considered the leader in Smith's clubhouse since head coach Billy Napier and the UF staff offered him on Oct. 5. However, after a coaching shakeup for the team in the secondary, seeing Will Harris join the fold in replacement of Corey Raymond, Smith is doing his due diligence before putting pen to paper on where he further his football career.

Florida currently holds three commitments in the defensive back room in the 2024 cycle, highlighted by five-star safety prospect Xavier Filsaime alongside safety Josiah Davis and cornerback Teddy Foster.
