FSU, Leonard Hamilton Land First Commitment In 2024 Class In Four-Star Wing AJ Swinton

Seminoles open up their 2024 class with a bang on the recruiting trail.

Leonard Hamilton has his first commitment of 2024, as the Seminoles picked up a pledge from four-star wing AJ Swinton from Bishop O’Connell in Arlington, VA on Thursday afternoon. He’s currently the 133rd-ranked player in 247’s composite rankings and is a former Virginia Tech commit.

Swinton was supposed to visit Florida State on September 1 but decided to go ahead and pull the trigger on committing, citing the program's style of play and ability to get bigger guards to the NBA as main driving points. At 6’5” and 180 pounds, he’s got the size FSU likes on the perimeter, though I could see them wanting him to bulk up some.

This is a player that fits exactly what Florida State likes in their prospects, long, extremely athletic, and a great finisher around the basket. Almost everything he finishes, he does it with a dunk and with authority. On3’s Jamie Shaw has a scouting report on him, stating “He has a good burst at the rim, and there is upside as a switchable defender and good rebounder for his size,” though the jump shot is still in the early stages of development his form looks good, just needs to improve on the building blocks. He’s also a very strong straight-line driver, but will need to work on his finesse game. Still, his athleticism is going to make him a very worthy gamble.

As the first addition to the 2024 class, Swinton will have the responsibility of getting more guys in a class that could carry as many as six, though I believe FSU will leave a few spots open for potential transfers. Florida State recently made the Top-6 for combo guard Jaeden Mustaf, and are thought to be high on Amier Ali’s list too.
