Dallas Cowboys Showing Serious NFL Draft Interest In Former FSU Football Star
The Dallas Cowboys are going through a major transition in the backfield with Tony Pollard and Ezekiel Elliott moving on over the last two seasons. Ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft, the Cowboy's top returning running back is Rico Dowdle, who has accumulated 96 carries for 385 yards and two touchdowns in four years at the professional level.
It's clear that Dallas needs to consider making an addition to the room later this month and the franchise is doing its due diligence. According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Cowboys are bringing in former Florida State star running back Trey Benson for a top-30 visit that will span from Wednesday to Thursday. His trip will coincide with former Texas running back Jonathan Brooks.
Benson and Brooks are considered two of the top prospects at their respective position. It's likely that one of them will be the first running back off the board later this month. Either would be a good option to add alongside Dowdle, Deuce Vaughn, Malik Davis, and Snoop Conner. With that being said, it might be hard to pass up on Benson after two productive seasons in Tallahassee and an eye-brow raising showing at the NFL Combine and at Pro Day.

The Mississippi native rebounded from a serious knee injury he suffered at Oregon to total 310 carries for 1,896 and 23 touchdowns on the ground in his two years with the Seminoles. Benson tied for seventh in program history in single-season rushing scores with 14 in 2023. He was named Second-Team All-ACC in both seasons at Florida State.
Benson was at his best during his four rivalry game appearances against Florida and Miami, helping the Seminoles go 4-0 in the process. He rushed 70 times for 414 yards and ten scores while running all over the Hurricanes and Gators.
After recording a 4.39-second 40-yard dash and 10'2" broad jump while weighing 216 pounds at the NFL Combine, Benson has only further improved his standing compared to other running backs. He recorded 23 bench press reps of 225 pounds at Florida State's Pro Day which would've tied for fifth among the participants at his position in Indianapolis.
Dallas holds three picks in the top-100 where the franchise could potentially secure Benson. The Cowboys currently have the No. 24, No. 56, and No. 87 picks at their disposal.
