College Football Insider Lists Florida State's Mike Norvell as Coaching Candidate for Texas A&M

Norvell signed a three-year extension with the Seminoles in February that bumped his average salary up to $8.05 million.

The college football world was shocked when Texas A&M chose to fire head coach Jimbo Fisher on Sunday. The move came after the Aggies defeated Mississippi State 51-10 and also with eight years and more than $75 million remaining on Fisher's contract.

Clearly, the powers in College Station were ready to shake things up regardless of the cost. So, what could come next as Texas A&M looks to make a splash rather than risk falling further down the SEC?

Shortly after Fisher was fired, ESPN's Pete Thamel released an early list of potential candidates. The names he drummed up included Florida State's Mike Norvell, along with Ole Miss's Lane Kiffin, Duke's Mike Elko, Oregon's Dan Lanning, Washington's Kalen DeBoer, Kansas State's Chris Klieman, UTSA's Jeff Traylor, and former Arizona Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury.

Two things that Fisher and Norvell both have in common are that they both have ties to FSU plus renowned agent Jimmy Sexton represents each coach. A veteran and well-known name in the business who is linked to most of the top college football coaches around the country, Sexton certainly knows how to drum up the waters.

Before your heart starts palpating and the PTSD begins to kick in, it is important to remember that Fisher and Norvell are in entirely different circumstances. Fisher was unhappy with the administration and was unable to see anyone else's point of view while refusing to publicly commit to the Seminoles.

Norvell has been the complete opposite since arriving at Florida State. His love for the program, players, and staff has been obvious throughout his tenure for the Seminoles. Plus, Norvell is working hand-in-hand with Athletic Director Michael Alford, President Richard McCullough, and other members of the administration to continue improving the program.

It wouldn't be a surprise to see this turn into another raise for Norvell. He's certainly earned it with Florida State on the cusp of its first ACC Championship and College Football Playoff berth since 2014. Norvell received a three-year extension in February that bumped up his average salary to $8.05 million.

Florida State has won 16 consecutive games, the third-longest streak in the country and the third-longest streak in program history. Norvell is 25-6 in his last 31 games and holds an overall record of 28-16 with the Seminoles.
