FAMU Football Officially Adds Two More Former FSU Football Players
National Signing Day isn't what it once was as most of the action goes down in December nowadays. With that being said, there were still a large number of programs around the country that announced additions to their 2024 classes on Wednesday.
Florida A&M is entering a new era with its football program after elevating James Colzie as its next head coach. Colzie will be replacing Willie Simmons, who accepted a position as the running backs coach at Duke to begin 2024.
The move threw a Rattlers' program that finished the previous season 12-1 into a loop as the program searched for Simmons' replacement while trying to put a recruiting class together. Colzie and his staff didn't back down in the face of the challenge as FAMU announced a series of transfer signees on NSD.
Among the newcomers are a pair of names that will ring true with Florida State fans; junior running back Rodney Hill and redshirt junior kicker Max Larson. The pair of former Seminoles will make up a trio of players who used to wear garnet and gold that will now don green and orange. Ex-FSU cornerback Demorie Tate previously transferred to FAMU in December.
Hill entered the transfer portal after the ACC Championship and went through an interesting couple of weeks. He initially committed to FAMU before announcing that he was instead transferring to Miami following the announcement of Simmons to Duke. In the aftermath of Colzie's hiring, Hill elected to remain with the Rattlers.
The former three-star recruit totaled 77 carries for 334 yards and two touchdowns during his two seasons with the Seminoles. He rushed 50 times for 190 yards and a touchdown while catching five passes for 83 yards this past season. Hill recorded a season-high 42 yards on five carries in FSU's win over Boston College in September.
Hill will have a chance to make an immediate impact with FAMU losing its top two leading rushers.
Larson spent the last two years at Florida State after joining the program as a walk-on. Most of his contributions came on the scout team as he backed up starting kicker Ryan Fitzgerald,
The Florida native spent his high school career at St. Thomas Aquinas. He earned an honorable mention all-state recognition after going 3/3 on field goals and 20/20 on PATs as the Raiders won a state championship in Doak Campbell Stadium to conclude his senior season. He averaged 53.9 yards per kickoff with five touchbacks.
FAMU needs a new starting kicker after Cameron Gillis graduated in the fall.
