Mike Norvell Provides An Update on Darrell Jackson's Waiver Process
Florida State got some good news in the spring when veteran offensive lineman D'Mitri Emmanuel had his waiver approved to play a seventh year at the college level. Emmanuel started all 13 games last year and has the opportunity to do so again in 2023.
However, the Seminoles are still waiting to learn the status of another player that is expected to play a big role for the team this upcoming season. Former Miami defensive tackle Darrell Jackson transferred to Tallahassee in December and went through spring practice with the team.
The issue? Jackson began his college career at Maryland before transferring to Miami last offseason. After picking up his bags and moving to his third program in three years, he's in need of a waiver from the NCAA to be eligible to play without sitting out a season.
While speaking on a variety of topics at the ACC's spring meetings, head coach Mike Norvell provided an update on where things currently stand with Jackson's waiver.
"We've had good conversation, just making sure as you go through the waiver process sometimes it's back and forth, making sure you're providing as much information. There's been good back and forth in providing all of the questions that the NCAA would have," Norvell said on Tuesday. "I appreciate Darrell and the family and being able to help with that. So that's just kind of what we've been working through. Hopefully it will be something that we'll know before we get too far into the summer. That's been important. We do have a sense of urgency and I think the NCAA understands that."
A native of Havana, FL, Jackson is reportedly returning home to be closer to a sick relative. If his waiver is denied, Florida State will have an opportunity to appeal the ruling. The Seminoles are hoping to have the junior defensive tackle as a member of an interior rotation that also includes Fabien Lovett, Braden Fiske, Dennis Briggs, and Joshua Farmer.
Jackson is coming off a season with the Hurricanes where he started all but one of the 12 games on the defensive line. He recorded 27 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, and a pass breakup. Jackson made a career-high seven tackles in a loss to North Carolina. Spending his true freshman year at Maryland, he totaled 22 with the Terrapins while appearing in 13 games, with one start.
The 6-foot-5, 326-pound defensive tackle was a teammate of Joshua Farmer at Gadsden County High School during his prep career. The two were coached by former head coach Corey Fuller, who is now Florida State's Director of Football Relations.
