Patrick Surtain Sr. addresses the media for first time since being hired by Florida State

The Seminoles' latest hire held his introductory press conference on Wednesday.

Last month, Florida State made a splash hire by bringing in Patrick Surtain Sr. as the program's next defensive backs coach. Surtain Sr. joined the Seminoles are spending one year as a defensive assistant for the Miami Dolphins in 2022. Previously, he spent nine seasons coaching for south Florida power American Heritage High School. He was the head coach for his final six years with American Heritage, leading the Patriots to three state championships while developing a plethora of Division I products and NFL Draft selections.

Surtain Sr. was hired to replace former position coach Marcus Woodson, who accepted a job with Arkansas earlier in January. He recently officially joined the program and has been on the road recruiting as well as meeting with prospects on Florida State's campus.

At the time of his hire, head coach Mike Norvell released the following statement: “I’m incredibly excited to have Patrick Surtain joining the Nole Family. He brings a wealth of playing and coaching experience at the highest levels and has prioritized genuine relationships and developing players on and off the field. Patrick was an elite NFL player for more than a decade and then earned remarkable success as a high school coach in South Florida before continuing his development as an NFL coach. I’m happy for our student-athletes who will receive top-notch skills instruction while also learning life lessons from Coach Surtain.”
