Son of Former FSU Head Coach Commits to Father’s Alma Mater

After battling a rare medical condition, Ethan Fisher will follow in his father's footsteps.

Samford will have another member of the Fisher family tree playing football in Homewood. The son of former Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher, Ethan Fisher announced via social media on Wednesday that he would pursue his career as a kicker for the Samford Bulldogs.

Fisher has suffered a lifelong battle with Fanconi Anemia, a blood disorder that affects bone marrow and can lead to a shortage of red and white blood cells as well as platelets. Fanconi Anemia is a rare and challenging condition, and for him to overcome the difficulties associated with it and pursue his passion for sports is commendable.

"Never would I ever have thought I would have this opportunity especially being told at a very young age by doctors that I may never see the field," Fisher wrote on social media. "Coming from a football family I took that very personal and ever since then I’ve had to work and earn everything I have gotten."

His father spent a year at Samford in 1987 and played quarterback there, setting multiple records under head coach Terry Bowden. It's no surprise that his son would choose the Bulldogs to spend his college career.

"I want to thank God for giving me the talent and the abilities I have. With that being said I will be continuing my academic career at samford university!!! Go dawgs!!!"

Jimbo Fisher had a polarizing career at FSU. From continuing the winning tradition that the late Bobby Bowden created and winning a national championship in 2013, to riffs with administration and ultimately leaving Florida State as he flirted with multiple schools, eventually landing at Texas A&M.

The Fisher family was a common and welcome sight on the sidelines of Bobby Bowden Field during Jimbo's tenure. After his father's departure to TAMU, Ethan Fisher decided to stay in Tallahassee to attend high school at Maclay before committing to Samford.
