Florida State held its first scrimmage of the spring on Saturday morning inside Doak Campbell Stadium. While the team held five practices leading up to the scrimmage, it provided an opportunity for the Seminoles to dive into more of a competitive setting. The exhibition was particularly useful for newcomers and players returning from injury to assert themselves.

One of the highlights of the day was a touchdown pass down the sideline from redshirt freshman quarterback AJ Duffy to redshirt senior wide receiver Winston Wright Jr. Duffy's pass was perfectly placed over the outstretched arms of a diving true freshman Quindarrius Jones. Wright Jr. corralled the pass (to the dismay of linebackers coach Randy Shannon in the background) and sprinted the distance for the score.

The Georgia native is on the way to a full return from a leg injury that he suffered as a passenger in a car accident just over a year ago. Wright Jr. says that his confidence is only continuing to grow. He recently squatted 455 pounds during Florida State's 'squat party' leading up to spring practice.

That's the most weight he's ever squatted before and shows the strength he's regained in his leg. Wright Jr. expects to squat even more in the summer.

“Confidence is growing with the more reps that I take,” Wright earlier this month. “I say I feel more confident in myself. I feel more in shape. I’m getting back in shape as we go. I feel real good with where I’m at right now.”

Wright Jr. practiced last fall and it looked possible that he'd be able to return to game action. The results have been even more promising during the first half of Florida State's slate of spring practices. He's been making plays out of the slot and hasn't shied away from contact.

While he didn't suit up for the Seminoles in 2022, Wright Jr. was a proven player during his three years at West Virginia. He caught 129 passes for 1338 yards and seven touchdowns on offense while returning 50 kickoffs for 1,236 yards and two touchdowns in 33 games, with 16 starts.

That included a career-high 63 catches for 588 yards and five receiving touchdowns in 2021. He also averaged 26.9 yards per kick return that season and brought one back for a score.
