Former FSU Football Running Back Signs Contract With New York Jets

The former Seminole is one of four running backs under contract with the Jets.

The NFL Playoffs will begin this weekend but that means over half of the league have already started their offseasons.

The New York Jets were one of the most disappointing teams in 2023 after star quarterback Aaron Rodgers was injured in the first game of the season. The franchise chose to stick behind struggling backup Zach Wilson and paid the price by missing the playoffs.

The Jets are hoping to bounce back with a fully recovered Rodgers back at the helm and are in the process of putting the right players around him. On Monday, the team announced that it was signing multiple members of its practice squad to reserve/futures contracts to remain on the roster during the offseason. The group included former Florida State running back Jacques Patrick.

New York signed Patrick to its practice squad in December and now will take a further look at him over the next couple of months. Patrick has bounced around between the NFL and XFL. He joined the Jets after being released by the Tennessee Titans in October. Patrick previously had stints with the Cincinnati Bengals (2021, 2022), San Francisco 49ers (2021), Carolina Panthers (2021), and Denver Broncos (2023).

Most of his time at the NFL level has been spent contributing to the practice squad. Patrick did appear in two games with the 49ers where he rushed two times for 12 yards. He went unselected during the 2020 NFL Draft but has still been able to consistently draw interest from professional teams.

Patrick previously played in the XFL for the Tampa Bay Vipers (2020) and the San Antonio Brahmas (2023). He was among the league leaders with 443 yards and five touchdowns in ten appearances for the Brahmas last spring.

The fourth-year professional played his college career at Florida State under former head coach Jimbo Fisher and former head coach Willie Taggart. While playing alongside Dalvin Cook and Cam Akers, he totaled 366 rushes for 1,790 yards with 17 touchdowns on the ground while catching 47 passes for 356 yards and a score.

Outside of Patrick, the Jets have star Breece Hall and rookies, Israel Abanikanda, and Xazavian Valladay, under contract.
