Former FSU Football Standout Won't be Traded at NFL Trade Deadline

The former Florida State defensive end is off the trade block as the Carolina Panthers are keen on keeping him on the roster.

The NFL trade deadline is quickly approaching and if this season is anything like the last, we could be in for quite the entertaining weekend leading up to the Oct. 31 deadline.

One player that was thought to potentially be on the trade market was former Florida State standout Brian Burns. It was rumored that teams were making pitches to try and trade for the Carolina Panthers' stud defensive end.

The Panthers, however, have made it known that they are not interested in trading Burns. ESPN's Dan Graziano reports that inquiring teams are being shut down by the team when they begin to ask about Burns or submit trade offers.

Burns and the Panthers were unable to come to an agreement on a contract extension ahead of the NFL season, and Burns will be hitting free agency in the upcoming offseason.

The Los Angeles Rams reportedly offered two first-round picks and a third-round pick for the defensive end a year ago. Because Burns has an expiring contract, teams won't offer the same package.

At this point, the Panthers should be doing everything in their power to retain Burns when the offseason comes or else this will look like quite the miss if they lose him to another team and receive no compensation for it.

Burns is in his fifth NFL season and seems to be only improving as time rolls on. Last season, he had a career-high of 12.5 sacks and seems to be on a similar pace this season. He has four sacks, 20 tackles, and seven tackles for loss on the season.

The former Seminole spent three seasons in Tallahassee, racking up 23 total sacks, with ten of those sacks coming in his final season with the team. He had 123 total tackles at Florida State along with 38.5 tackles for loss.
