On Monday, the Miami Dolphins announced that they were waiving rookie quarterback James Blackman. His release came in a corresponding move for the Dolphins to sign veteran cornerback Parry Nickerson. The Dolphins still have Tua Tagovailoa, Mike White, and Skylar Thompson under contract at quarterback.
Blackman was not selected in the 2023 NFL Draft but was quickly picked up by the Dolphins. He went through Rookie Mini-Camp and Mandatory Mini-Camp with the team during the offseason. Blackman faced an uphill battle to make the roster with Miami holding a veteran quarterback and promising second-year player behind Tagovailoa.
Surprisingly, the team chose to move on from Blackman prior to Miami's first preseason game on Friday against the Atlanta Falcons. There is still a lot of time remaining in training camp and it's possible that another franchise brings him in as a potential practice squad player.
Blackman played six years at the college level, spending his first four years at Florida State and his final two seasons at Arkansas State. He suited up for three head coaches in four seasons in Tallahassee; Jimbo Fisher (2017), Willie Taggart (2018-19), and Mike Norvell (2020). The revolving door of coaches and one of the worst offensive lines in the country made it tough for Blackman on the field.
The Florida native completed 765/1246 passes for 9,260 yards with 65 touchdowns to 33 interceptions at the college level. Blackman also rushed for three scores on the ground. He was named the 2017 Independence Bowl MVP after completing 18/26 passes for 233 yards with four touchdowns and zero interceptions in a 42-13 victory against Southern Miss.
