UAB Transfer Jaylen Key Recaps Official Visit to Florida State, Upcoming Plans

"It definitely kind of slimmed things down a little bit, most definitely. We’ll leave it at that.”

The Florida State Seminoles hosted two high-profile transfers this past weekend in UAB safety grad transfer Jaylen Key and Michigan State wide receiver Keon Coleman who both were on official visits.

Key ranked third on his team in tackles with 60 and had three interceptions, 4.5 tackles for loss, and two forced fumbles as a redshirt junior in 2022. The Quincy native had a career-high 12 tackles at LSU and helped lead a UAB defense that was one of the best in the country.

"It went great. Definitely a great experience. A building full of energy, coaches, great energy, players, great energy," Key said when asked about his time in Tallahassee.

Key revealed his top six schools in April and has said his list has slimmed down following his official visit. Florida State was among the programs to make the cut. He also included Alabama and Ohio State.

"I’d definitely say, like, the energy is big around here. The expectation to be good that’s always love; ever since I was a little boy, it was always that way. The work put in, most definitely. Over the past year, to see how it’s building up to be better and better to where next year definitely has a chance to be a great year."

With head coach Mike Norvell's recent success in having transfers make it to the next level, Key said that he believes that the staff is well-equipped to help guys fulfill their dreams.

"I have no doubt that these guys are able to prepare whoever for the next level. Whether that’s me, all the other guys on the team, everybody, it’ll be a whole great defense, a whole great secondary.”

Key also mentioned that he likes the way he could fit in the FSU secondary.

"I like the way they fit their safeties. The safeties are always pretty much in the run fit here. They’re asked to do a variety of things which helps you on the next level, but it’s also just fun football when you’re asked to do a bunch of jobs. You don’t want to be stuck just doing one thing. You want to be versatile. That was one of the biggest things.”

He plans to take an official visit to Alabama on Monday and Tuesday, followed by another to Ohio State on Wednesday and Thursday. After a trip to Ole Miss last week, Key stated that he would make his decision by May 15-16 and enroll soon after. He also confirmed that Oregon is no longer in the picture.
