Georgia Football Culture Carrying Over to Syracuse Under Fran Brown
Every offseason has become a transition period for college football teams, and Georgia was no exception to that this year. The Bulldogs lost a litany of players to the transfer portal and had several coaches depart the staff for other opportunities. For one former Georgia coach and several former players, a new home was found at Syracuse.
Towards the end of the 2023 season, former defensive backs coach Fran Brown was hired to be the head coach at Syracuse. That translated into former Georgia players showing immediate interest in the Orange after entering the portal. Coach Brown would go on to sign three former Bulldogs from the transfer portal - which has naturally extended Georgia's footprint up to the state of New York.
One of the former Georgia players who followed Coach Brown to his new program was wide receiver Jackson Meeks. He spent three years in Athens before ultimately deciding to hit the portal to seek better opportunities. Despite no longer being with his former team, the Georgia football program still impacts Meeks and is forming a new culture at Syracuse.
“(Georgia) taught me what it looks like to be elite,” Meeks said. “I try to tell my teammates ‘It’s always the small things.’ In Georgia, everything was detailed. And up here we make everything detailed. Detailed, Accountable, Relentless, Tough.”
Meeks is accompanied by wide receiver Yazeed Haynes and offensive lineman Joshua Miller - both former Bulldogs. Coach Brown and the three Georgia transplants might be a small makeup of the entire staff and roster, but their former college roots seem to be playing a role in helping turn around the Syracuse football program.
