Georgia Basketball: Anthony Edwards Named to U.S. Player Pool for Olympics
Former Georgia basketball star Anthony Edwards is looking to take a new step in his basketball journey. After being named a McDonald's All-American, becoming the SEC Rookie of the Year in 2020, and earning an NBA All-Star spot in 2023, the Atlanta native has been named to the 41-man player pool for Team USA's 12-player roster for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
Other players named to the pool include LeBron James, Steph Curry, and Khawi Leonard. Team USA is the defending Gold medalist, but the group is coming off of a disappointing fourth-place finish at the 2023 FIBA Men’s World Cup in Manila. The group is led by head coach Steve Kerr (Golden State Warriors) and managing director Grant Hill. Kerr was an assistant to head coach Greg Popovich during the 2020 gold medal run.
Edwards is currently ranked fifteenth in the NBA in scoring with 25.5 points per game and has led his Minnesota Timberwolves team to a 30-13 record, currently the best mark in the Western Conference.
After being named a top-five recruit in the 2019 class, Edwards chose the hometown Bulldogs over offers from Kentucky, North Carolina, and a plethora of other bluebloods. He made the most of his time in Athens, earning SEC Rookie of the Year for the 2019-20 season and eventually being selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft.
The official Team USA roster will be announced at a later date.
