UGA Equipment Staff Offers More Hints That Georgia Will Wear "Blackout" Jerseys Against UAB
On Thursday, the Georgia football equipment staff hinted that the Bulldogs would don their "Blackout" jerseys for Saturday's 7:30 PM kickoff against UAB inside Sanford Stadium with an Instagram post that featured Alannah Myles's 1989 hit song "Black Velvet". Later that same day, the equipment staff also posted a video of staff members ostensibly preparing the team's gameday pants, but visible in the background where black jerseys hanging in players' lockers.
On Friday, the hints continued as the equipment staff posted another video of a staff member preparing the gameday gear for Georgia's coaches with the song "Let's Get It Started" by the Black Eyed Peas. While the choice to play a song by the Black Eyed Peas over the video could certainly be entirely coincidental, in light of the equipment staff's earlier posts, it is reasonable to view its latest post as yet another hint that the Bulldogs will bring back the team's "blackout" jerseys for the first time since the 2020 Peach Bowl against Cincinnati.
Georgia first wore its "blackout" jerseys against Auburn in 2007. The Bulldogs wore the same jerseys once again later that season in the Sugar Bowl victory over Hawaii. The following year, Georgia donned the "blackout" jerseys once again for the highly-anticipated matchup with Alabama inside Sanford Stadium. However, after the Bulldogs were defeated decisively by Alabama, the black jerseys were discontinued until they were revived by new Head Coach Kirby Smart in 2016 for Georgia's game against Louisiana, a game in which the Bulldogs won 35-21. Despite the team's success in the jerseys against Louisiana, Georgia would not again wear the "blackout" jerseys until 2020 when they were part of an initiative to honor 40th anniversary of the 1980 national championship team. That season the Bulldogs wore the "blackout" jerseys twice, against Mississippi State during the regular season and again against Cincinnati in the Peach Bowl.
This could all be one cruel prank by the Georgia equipment staff, but given the popularity of the "blackout" jerseys among the Georgia fan base and the fact that the game against UAB will be a rare night game between the hedges, signs are pointing towards the Bulldogs taking the field in black for the first time in nearly three years.
