What Travaris Robinson Brings to Georgia
Few position groups have seen turnover at the coaching position in the sport of college football quite like the defensive backs at the University of Georgia.
Since Charlton Warren left to become the defensive coordinator at Indiana in January of 2021, Georgia has seen Jahmile Addae, Fran Brown, Will Muschamp, and now Travaris Robinson coach the defensive backs. All that turnover hasn't exactly put a hampering on the performances of the position group either, with Georgia having finished inside the top-10 in passing yards allowed each of the last three seasons.
Saturday, it was announced that long-time SEC defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson would be taking over the role as DB coach.
Statement from Georgia head coach Kirby Smart:
“We are pleased to announce Travaris Robinson as our new Co-Defensive Coordinator and Safeties Coach,” said Georgia head coach Kirby Smart. “Travaris has 17 years of college coaching experience, including over a decade in the SEC mentoring some of the top defenses statistically in the NCAA.”
What Does Travaris Robinson Bring to Georgia
Experience
Robinson not only has a plethora of experience as a defensive backs coach, he's got experience at the highest levels of defense, having served as the defensive coordinator for South Carolina under Will Muschamp from 2016 until 2019. He's seen stops at Alabama, Florida, South Carolina, and his alma mater Auburn where he himself was a star defensive back. Simply put, this is a defensive backs coach that's been hired and sought after by some of the sport's best defensive back coaches once they've become head coaches. A defensive backs coach's coach.
Recruiting
Vernon Hargreaves III, Caleb Downs, Jordan Burch, Teez Tabor, Jaylen Mbakwe, and Dezz Ricks. Six Five stars in the last ten years of recruiting. That's what Robinson has done on the recruiting trail and though most of them have come from the defensive back position, this isn't just as a DBs recruiting guru either as was proven when he landed Jordan Burch at South Carolina back in the 2020 class. He will fit in at Georgia no different than he fit in at Alabama where he continued his recruiting success arguably at it's highest rates yet, signing Caleb Downs in 2023 before Downs became an All-SEC player as a true freshman.
Continuity
Travaris Robinson has undoubtedly made a lot of collegiate stops during his college coaching career. Since 2020, Robinson has been a member of four coaching staffs. Classifying this as a "long-term" hire is probably an incorrect assumption based on the recent history. However, look at the stops... South Carolina, Alabama, and now Georgia are three of the four schools, with Miami being the fourth. Sure, that's a lot of stops, but that's a lot of stops at places that are playing Georgia's brand of defense. Terminology won't be a problem nor will adapting to the "new" system for Robinson.
