Kirby Smart: 'I Want More than Relevance, I Want Dominance' from Georgia Football
The Georgia football program is coming off of a season that many would probably deem a successful year. Went undefeated in the regular season, played in the conference championship and dismantled Florida State in the Orange Bowl. For a team led by head coach Kirby Smart though, the standard is a little different and that’s something he recognizes and longs for as a leader of young men.
Since Coach Smart arrived in Athens, the Bulldogs have had their name in the flashing lights every season. Whether they’re at the top of the discussion or somewhere in the mix, Georgia football has become a very relevant program. However, relevancy isn’t the end goal, at least not for Coach Smart. It’s about doing what he was brought here to do: win championships.
ESPN writer Chris Low released a Q&A article with Coach Smart and one of the questions he asked the head ball coach was about his first national title in 2021 and being one of five coaches to win a championship at his alma mater. “What does that mean to you?” Here is what Coach Smart responded with:
“I was brought here to win championships, but the thing I'm proudest of has been the consistency. I look back on Year 1 (8-5) as a failure and not the standard, but every year after that we've been right there. Nobody else over that span can say they've finished in the top seven at the very end for seven straight years. You can't find it, not even at Alabama. We missed the damn playoff three times by being No. 5 or No. 6, so those are missed at-bats we would have had in this 12-team playoff. We've been relevant every year but that first one. But I want more than relevance. I want dominance, and we've been more dominant in the last three years. What I don't want are the ebbs and flows or the one-hit wonders you see out there. I don't want any player to leave Georgia without a championship.”
Some strong words from a coach who not too long ago became the first coach in the college football playoff’s history to win back-to-back titles. The Bulldogs will be searching for title number three under coach Smart in 2024, but first, they will have to earn a spot in the brand new expanded 12-team playoff format.
And if Georgia can dominate their 2024 regular season schedule like Coach Smart wants, then they will be in a prime position once the playoff rolls around to make a push for that third ring.
