Alabama Hires New Defensive Coordinator
Just as teams experienced roster movement during the month of January, whether that be players going to the NFL draft or players hitting the transfer portal, some teams have been trying to fill their staff out as well. One of those teams has been the Alabama Crimson Tide and their search for a new offensive and defensive coordinator.
Earlier in the week it was announced that Tommy Rees had reached a deal with Alabama to become the team's new offensive coordinator after Bill O'Brien left to go be with the New England Patriots. Rees was previously the offensive coordinator at Notre Dame. It has now been announced that Kevin Steele will be taking over as the team's defensive coordinator and filling in for Pete Golding.
Steele has previous experience working under Nick Saban as he was with the Crimson Tide from 2007-2015 serving as the team's defensive coordinator, linebackers coach, and director of player personnel. Most recently he served as Miami's defensive coordinator. He was also the interim head coach at Auburn during the 2020 season.
Georgia fans can take a sigh of relief now as there were early discussions about Glenn Schumann being a potential target to fill Alabama's vacancy at defensive coordinator. Schumann served as a coach for the Crimson Tide from 2008-2014 and then followed Kirby Smart to Georgia when he took over as head coach and has been with him since.
The Crimson Tide are coming off of a pretty disappointing season after they failed to win the western division in the SEC and missed out on the college football playoffs. Now as they bring in two new coordinators this season, all eyes are on Saban and his team to see if they can right the ship and get things rolling again for them.
