Evans Strong Outing Helps Georgia Pull out Midweek Win
For the third straight game, the Georgia Bulldogs baseball team outlasted their opponent by just one run, this time escaping with a 4-3 victory over the Presbyterian Blue Hose.
Presbyterian center fielder Joel Dragoo got things started early with a two-run homerun in the top of the first, marking his sixth of the season. However, Georgia third baseman Charlie Condon responded with a 417-foot bomb of his own to bring the Dawgs within one. Shortstop Kolby Branch accounted for the game-tying RBI after he drew a five-pitch walk.
After allowing the two-run longshot in the top of the first, Evans settled down en route to the second longest outing of his young career. In five innings of work, the sophomore left-hander struck out six Blue Hose batters while allowing just two runs, two hits and two walks.
After a Paul Toetz triple kicked off the sixth inning, Branch broke the tie with an RBI single to give the Dawgs their first lead of the game. Tuesday marks the fifth consecutive game Branch has accounted for at least one RBI, including multiple RBIs in each of the last three contests.
Just two innings later, Brody Fahr hit just the sixth home run of his collegiate career to knot things up at three through eight innings. Fahr’s home run was just the fourth hit of the game for the Blue Hose.
The tie was short-lived, however, as Condon recorded his second RBI of the game on a five-pitch walk to bring in the game-winning run with two outs in the bottom of the eighth. Brian Zeldin retired all three Presbyterian batters in the ninth to close out another hard-fought victory for the Bulldogs.
Following the win, Georgia now sits at 8-0 on the season and are one of three remaining undefeated teams in the SEC. The Dawgs will return to action when they host Michigan State for another midweek matchup on Wednesday night. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
