Georgia Defensive MVPS from G-Day Scrimmage, New Names to Know
We finally got our first look at Georgia's squad for the 2023 college football season, and there were several players that really stood out on both offense and defense. Some of the names come as no surprise, and others probably weren't even on anyone's radar heading into today.
Here are the defensive MVPs for the day:
Young LBs
If you follow recruiting circles, you might not have been surprised to see CJ Allen and Raylen Wilson making plays on Saturday. The two freshmen linebackers entered Georgia with plenty of expectations and they met those expectations on Saturday. Allen finished second on the team in tackles and Raylen Wilson had a pick six to finish off the scrimmage. The two freshmen looked the part and will likely contribute in some sort of role this fall.
Tykee Smith
It was refreshing for most in the Georgia faithful on Saturday to see a player like Smith, who's battled serious physical injuries in his two seasons at Georgia, make such an acrobatic and physical interception. The fifth-year senior defensive back started at STAR with Javon Bullard moving back to safety this spring. Though Smart is adamant things aren't permanent with regards to the defensive back rotation, one thing is clear after Saturday, the former All-American in Tykee Smith looks to be returning to full strength.
Young EDGEs
Marvin Jones Jr was out this spring, as was Jalon Walker, two players that will play some sort of role in the EDGE rotation this fall, but the young EDGE rushers had themselves a shining Saturday in the G-Day Scrimmage. Damon Wilson Jr. twice on sacks, something that this football team will need him to do on third downs this fall. Samuel M'Pemba and Gabriel Harris looked physically prepared to play in the Southeastern Conference this fall as well. Sources indicated the Georgia staff was more than pleased with the way the young guys attacked the opportunity this spring.
