The Biggest Question About Georgia's Quarterback Battle

The biggest question about Georgia's quarterback room heading into fall camp and the 2023 college football season.

While there is a pretty consistent belief that Carson Beck has all but solidified himself as the player who will step into the role of being Georgia's starting quarterback this year, a battle will still take place during fall camp. Beck looked to be at the top of the totem pole after the spring scrimmage in April, and he will have to maintain that position until week one rolls around.

The biggest question surrounding the Bulldogs' quarterback room isn't necessarily who the starting quarterback will be but what they look like. For the first time in Kirby Smart's head coaching career, he will be trotting out a quarterback that has both waited his turn and been developed for multiple seasons in Athens. The same cannot be said for Jacob Eason, Jake Fromm, and Stetson Bennett, who all either started as a true freshmen or transferred out at some point in their careers. Beck, Brock Vandagriff, and Gunner Stockton, on the other hand, have all resided in Athens and do not have a single start to their name.

A massive asset for Georgia in this scenario is Mike Bobo being the offensive coordinator this season. Bobo's track record with quarterbacks is mightily impressive, with names like Aaron Murray, Matthew Stafford, and David Greene attached to his resume. He even helped Nick Stevens turn into a borderline 4,000-yard passer during the 2017 season at Colorado State. Bobo has been around the game of football as a coach for nearly 25 years now, and he knows a thing or two about developing college quarterbacks.

It has also been shared by both players and coaches that despite there being a change at offensive coordinator this offseason, the offense will essentially remain the same for the most part. The language of the offense and the concepts will be similar to what Todd Monken ran during his time in Athens, which will be very beneficial for all three quarterbacks.

If Georgia's spring game was any indication of what could be in store for the quarterback position this season, then the Bulldogs' offense will be in great hands. But a scrimmage is a much different environment compared to what college football Saturdays in the fall will bring. Coach Smart and Bobo have some great choices to choose from, but the biggest factor is if all of the practice reps and minimal game reps of the past couple of seasons will translate to success as a starter for one of Beck, Vandagriff, or Stockton.
