RECAP: Georgia shakes the storm and outlasts Kentucky 21-0.
The Good Lord brought some much-needed rain to Eastern Georgia this past Saturday, however not along with it, the Georgia offense thunder and lightning. A sputtering offense leaving a dissatisfied Bulldog nation. But let's be fair here, the conditions were quite less than ideal.
It rained all day leading up to the game. It rained throughout the duration of the game. Winds up to 14 mph. To expect an electric passing game is just not reasonable. Everything was wet. The field, the ball, the players, the fans. Coach Smart had a game plan for the conditions and he stuck to it. And guess what? It worked.
It took a while but it worked. D'Andre Swift went off for 179 yards and 2 TDs. Herrien added a third on 60 yards. The game plan was patience, and it paid off to the tune of a 21-0 shutout. The defense was lights out allowing only 17 yards passing for the game, wearing down Kentucky just the way Kirby likes it to be done.
The offense is the glaring question mark. In press conferences, Coach Smart defended the offense and claims confidence in what they’re trying to do. He talks up his stars in Fromm and Swift and praises their veteran presence. Coach Smart has even declared that he is “not concerned” with the offense. So, maybe it’s time Georgia faithful be exactly that and trust the Head Coach. I myself have been skeptical of the offense all season, specifically the pedestrian play calling from new OC James Coley. I’ve been one of the biggest critics of the offensive scheme this season. No more.
It is time to trust the process. It is time to have faith in Kirby Smart. More than that, it is time to have faith in these players. They make mistakes sure, but they are laying it all on the line for the team. The next few weeks are not going to be easy for the Dawgs. The de facto SEC East championship is next on the docket, after a much-needed bye week, on November 2 when the Dawgs head to Jacksonville to take on the red-hot Florida Gators. Now more than ever, these boys need the support of what I believe is the best fanbase in all of college football. They need the Bulldog faithful to rally around them.
The defense is elite. Georgia's current roster has an overall score on 247sports.com of 91.34, which ranks 3rd overall behind only Bama and OSU. Their current 14, 5-stars on roster are more than any team in the country. Perhaps that's why Kirby Smart and staff firmly believe they can simply wear down opponents.
The SEC rushing leader in D'Andre Swift, as a player that's been seen as high as #16 overall on draft analyst boards. The same QB that led UGA to a national championship appearance, is still under center. One slip up to South Carolina makes it tough, it doesn't make it impossible. So, show up and show them you still believe in them. Show them that belief that they can still win it all.
