PREVIEW: Georgia set to take on in-state foe
Fresh off the heels of a two-game sweep of rival Georgia Tech, the Georgia Bulldogs’ baseball team will shift their focus to another in-state foe.
Tuesday will mark the 106th meeting between the Georgia Bulldogs and Georgia Southern Eagles, making GS the eighth most-played opponent in Georgia program history. The Dawgs hold a 60-44-1 advantage over the Eagles all-time.
Georgia enters Tuesday’s contest with a 10-1 record, with the lone loss coming to Michigan State in a 19-6 midweek blowout. All-American slugger Charlie Condon has led the charge in Wes Johnson’s first season at the helm, ranking within the top six in the NCAA in nearly every offensive category.
For the second straight Tuesday, the Dawgs will start Jarvis Evans on the mound. Fresh off the second best start of his career, the towering left-handed pitcher should give Georgia an advantage.
The Eagles, on the other hand, have struggled to find their footing during a brutal stretch to begin the 2024 season and currently sit at 4-7. Rodney Hennon’s team has held a lead in five of their seven losses, but the Eagles bullpen has yet to show they can consistently seal a victory.
Offensively, the Eagles are led by one of the peskiest hitters in the Sun Belt Conference in Josh Tate. The Georgia transfer leads the Eagles with a .378 batting average and a .481 on-base percentage. Senior infielder Jarrett Brown adds a veteran bat to the lineup, which shows in his .351 batting average and .457 on-base percentage.
The Dawgs’ offense should have a field day against a weak GS bullpen, which cannot be trusted until proven otherwise. The Georgia defense must also do its part by stopping an Eagle offense that can explode.
