Georgia was not able to keep all of their coordinators this offseason as former offensive coordinator Todd Monken made the decision to transition back to the NFL with the Baltimore Ravens, but they did maintain defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann.

Earlier in the offseason, the Philadelphia Eagles had several conversations with Schumann about wanting to bring him on board to be the organization's defensive coordinator, but he ultimately decided to stay in Athens. Over the past couple of years, the Eagles have shown a prominent interest in what Georgia has built, as they have taken five former Bulldogs in the last two draft classes. All of which were defensive players that played under Schumann.

During his media availability today, Schumann discussed why he made the decision to return to the University of Georgia for the 2023 season and not pursue a career at the NFL level. Here is what he had to say:

"When you're successful, opportunities come for everybody. Opportunities come for players, opportunities come for coaches. It was an honor to be considered and to be reached out to by them. I appreciated it. That's about how I went through that process, and I am glad to be where I am"

On why he has continued to choose to stay at Georgia:

"There's a lot of ways to define the quality of life. One, you're responsible as a husband and a father to do what's best for you and your family and their well-being. My family is extremely happy here. Two, quality of life in this profession is generally tied to winning, and I have been very fortunate between both being here and at Alabama that we have been extremely successful, so I have a high expectation and standard for what I want to achieve in my career. Beyond that, I think a lot of men, women, people in general, people always talk about the grass isn't always greener, and when you look at it, there's been a lot of people who have been extremely happy, and they tried to be happier, and they wound up miserable... There's a lot of reasons to still be at Georgia."

Georgia has constructed a prestigious defensive identity at the college level and is often considered to have the best defense in the sport on a yearly basis. Much of that success is credited to the defensive mastermind of head coach Kirby Smart, but Schumann has also played a prominent role as well. He has held the label of co-defensive coordinator since the 2019 season and has coached the linebacker position since his arrival in Athens.

It's not often that a reigning national championship team is able to hold onto the core of their coaching, nonetheless after back-to-back titles, but Georgia was able to survive this year's wave for the most part. The Bulldogs' defensive success cannot be accredited to just a singular person, but holding on to Schumann for at least one more season was major news for Georgia.
