Jake Fromm NFL Draft Stock Update: NFL Exec Shares Thoughts on Georgia QB.
The objective of pursuing a national championship is the sole obsession of all within the Bulldog nation. As it has been since the all too spoken about 1980 championship team.
But somewhere, not too far back there, there's a clock ticking in every Georgia fan's head with an undetermined final buzzer. When will Jake Fromm play his last game at Georgia?
Well thanks to the SI's Albert Breer, there's at least a little more clarity surrounding Fromm's draft status going into the remainder of the season.
Heading into Saturday's matchup with Auburn, Breer spoke with an NFL Executive that said the following about Fromm:
"He’s a really solid QB. Definitely are going to be people that knock him for his lack of ‘arm talent’ and I don’t think he’s elite, but there are plenty of successful QBs with similar arms. He’s smart, tough, poised, makes good decisions and is accurate. For teams that love to push the ball down the field, maybe he isn’t what they ideally want. But the teams that like to get the ball out quick I think will like him.” - NFL Exec according to Albert Breer
Breer also spoke with an AFC Scouting director that was one of the doubters the executive foresaw. Saying,
"He’s a good player but not super talented, if that makes sense. Pretty average arm. Not a very impressive athlete. Small. It’s the sum of the parts with him. The intangibles are superior to his talent."
Fromm's draft stock seems to be an ever-changing evaluation, which confirms what the NFL exec was referencing. There's going to be some that like Fromm's game, and others that wouldn't come near him because he doesn't have all the prototypical measurables.
As for the Georgia faithful, assuming Fromm's draft stock sticks where it currently is - which we believe is anywhere from late first to mid-second - does he return for his senior season?
If I had to place odds on it, I'd say it's 50/50 either way, which I know isn't really helpful, but what we can do is assess the options if he doesn't return.
Stetson Bennett: Currently a redshirt sophomore on Georgia's roster, could Stetson Bennett be the next in a long line of stop-gap quarterbacks in Athens? He showed signs of the ability to run Coley's offense in the spring and has surprising arm-talent.
D'Wan Mathis: Mathis underwent brain surgery this offseason and is seemingly taking a redshirt this season. Just a true freshman this season, the 6'6 quarterback from Michigan was the 9th ranked pro-style quarterback in the 2019 class.
Carson Beck: The 4-star from Jacksonville, Florida just wrapped up his senior season for Providence High. As a junior, Beck led his team to a state championship in one of the toughest classifications in Florida.
The electrifying quarterback that's currently redshirting at Houston in one of the most unprecedented decisions we've seen in college football. We've seen graduate transfers, we've seen traditional transfers, what we haven't seen is a fully healthy football player take a year off with hopes of presumably transferring out.
Now, typically transfers under Kirby Smart have been guys who have graduated and transferred in like Lawrence Cager and Eli Wolf. However, without an impact player set and ready at the quarterback position, could Smart turn his recruiting charm on for the dual-threat from Houston?
