NFL Draft Could Continue an Impressive Trend for Georgia's Secondary

The 2023 NFL draft could continue an impressive trend that Georgia's secondary has created over the past few years.

When it comes to the development of players in the back half of the defense, there may not be a better program for the job than the University of Georgia. Part of that has to do with the Bulldogs' ability to reel in high-caliber talent on the recruiting trail, but they also have the upper hand on staff.

Head coach Kirby Smart played defensive back during his playing days at Georgia in 1995-98. He also served as a defensive backs coach at Valdosta State, LSU and with the Miami Dolphins earlier in his coaching career. Will Muschamp, the current co-defensive coordinator for Georgia, also played safety at Georgia and has a long history of coaching the position. Pair those two up with a young rising star on the coaching landscape in Fran Brown, and you will have a hard time finding any other program with that many intelligent minds when it comes to coaching up players in the secondary.

Not only does Georgia look good on paper but they have proof of concept to go along with it. Since Smart took over as head coach, Georgia has had three members of their secondary go in the first round and seven total players drafted over the last four years. The Bulldogs now have two more players up for grabs in this year's draft class with defensive back Kelee Ringo and safety Christopher Smith on the verge of beginning their professional careers.

In fact, the Bulldogs are chasing after some NFL draft history at the secondary position this year.

The Bulldogs have done a tremendous job pumping out some of the best talents at both cornerback and safety, and that trend does not show any signs of stopping. Names like Kamari Lassiter, Javon Bullard and Malaki Stark still reside on Georgia's roster, and all three have shown signs of having the potential to play at the next level. That goes without mentioning the names the Bulldogs have landed on the recruiting trail over the past couple of years either.

Smart and his staff have configured a roster that is built to last when it comes to the secondary, and the 2023 NFL draft class is looking to be yet another example of that. Georgia is consistently one of the best defenses in college football from top to bottom, and them transpiring into an NFL pipeline at cornerback and safety is a big reason for that.
