SEC Championship Game Tying History Together for Carson Beck

Georgia quarterback Carson Beck will be brought back to full circle on Saturday when he plays Alabama in the SEC Championship game.

It's not typical for college players to take that route that Georgia quarterback Carson Beck did as a college football player. A player waiting a full three years to be named as the starting quarterback is unheard of in today's era of the sport, but as the famous saying goes, patience is a virtue. Beck just finished leading his team to its third straight undefeated regular season while also playing like one of the best quarterbacks in the country. His next task, however, will connect his football career back to the very beginning.

The Bulldogs are set to face Alabama in this year's SEC Championship and are currently favored by a little less than a touchdown. College football playoff hopes are on the line, a historic winning streak is in jeopardy and the reign of a dynasty hangs in the balance. For Beck, though, this game means a little more than most.

Flashing back to the year 2018, Beck took a visit to Alabama at the beginning of the summer. The Crimson Tide were fresh off of winning a national title that season, and in typical Nick Saban fashion, he was looking to capitalize off of the momentum. That national championship victory, of course, came against Kirby Smart during his second season at the University of Georgia.

Four days after his visit to Alabama, Beck announced his commitment to Nick Saban and the Tide. That verbal commitment would stick for a while but not long enough, as Beck would end up decommitting from Alabama in February of 2019 and then committing to Georgia nearly a month later.

Georgia has played Alabama a couple of times since Beck arrived in Athens, one of those times being on this exact stage, but this will be the first time in his career that he will have the opportunity to play against the team he was initially ready to call home. Georgia has of course won an SEC title and two national titles since Beck arrived on campus, but there is something to be said about getting to claim due to your own doing on the field.

It won't be classified as such but this weekend's game will certainly feel like a "win or go home situation". It will be a game that is full of emotions on both sides of the ball as these two teams have quite a bit of history together as of late, but for the Georgia quarterback, there's a little bit more than most.
