UGA Football: Stop Telling Me Georgia's Wide Receivers Aren't Good Enough

As the Bulldog Maven's resident Voice of the Fan, I've gotta say it. I've had enough of people telling me that Georgia's WRs aren't good enough.

I check Twitter not too long after I wake up every morning. Just a quick browse through the happenings as I start my day.

I stumbled upon a spirited post in regards to our WR core this morning. Apparently some people in the industry think it's a major cause for concern. They're wrong.

Let me explain.

I like to look at things with comparisons and facts instead of just throwing something out there hoping to get clicks. Especially something negative for no real reason at all. So let's rewind to last season and take a look.

The first two games last year are a really good starting point. A cupcake at home and an SEC East opponent on the road.

Through those two games last season, the WR room was lead by Mecole Hardman. He started off the season strong with a combined 2 game total of 166 yards and 2 TDs. That's a nice 83 yards per game to start the season while finishing with a per-game average of just under 39 yards.

If you judged strictly by the first 2 games, one could believe that Mr. Hardman would potentially end the 2018 season with over 1100 yards, a school record. That just wasn't the case.

In the world of college football, things are always fluid. Players emerge out of nowhere at times. We saw that last year with JJ Holloman. Once he dug in his cleats he became one of, if not the go-to receiver. Even though through 2 weeks he had hauled in just 2 catches for a little over 20 yards. A far cry from where he'd finish. I think we all see what a 2-week barometer will provide.

But everyone left after 2018. Right? Wrong!

People will lead you to believe that the UGA WR room was left completely empty after the season. It isn't like Coach Smart and company had to turn to Craigslist in hopes of finding someone that may know how to catch a football. (Similar to what the team in Gainesville, FL had to do to find a Head Coach.)

That's just not how we conduct business in Athens, Georgia these days. Instead, we recruit at an extremely high level and reload each year. Names like Tyler Simmons, Demetris Robertson, Matt Landers, and Kearis Jackson were waiting and learning last year while guys like George Pickens and Dom Blaylock were waiting to arrive.

Oh, let's not forget 5 star, RB James Cook. He isn't lining up in the slot because we don't have other options. He's lining up in the slot because we are stacked at RB and he's far too dynamic to keep off the field.

There's one thing every championship team does as often as possible, that's get the ball in the hands of their playmakers. Folks, James Cook is a playmaker. If you haven't seen that already please take off your Stevie Wonder glasses and try out something new. Even if they're shaded in Red and Black.

I'll close with this. I love every single guy that caught a pass last year. I truly do. But I won't pretend like the group coming behind them won't be able to meet or exceed the level of play that we strive for.

This WR group is full of talent, talent we've seen on display for the last two Saturdays. While some will say that our wide receivers are a sign of trouble for us. Again, they're wrong. Our group of wide receivers are going to be a wealth of trouble for opposing defenses for a long time. These kids are young but they're ultra-talented and only scratching the surface.

All that I have left for those in doubt is to suggest that you wake up, buckle up, and enjoy the show... Go Dawgs!
