Why Georgia is the Most Dangerous College Football Playoff Contender
The Georgia football program picked up one of the most prolific wins in all of college football on Saturday against Ole Miss. The Bulldogs defeated a top-10 team by 35 points, they had over 600 yards of total offense and threw and rushed for over 300 yards each. It was a dominant performance for the reigning back-to-back national champs, and they need to be recognized as the most dangerous team in the sport.
Georgia is currently only one of two teams in the country that have a top-10 scoring offense and defense; SMU is the other. They're allowing an average of 15.4 points per game on defense and 40.6 points per game on offense. The Bulldogs have scored 45 or more points in five different games this season.
Over the last two seasons, Georgia was recognized as a team that had good offenses with elite defenses. The current Georgia does not hold that same identity. This is a football program that has a great defense with an elite offense, which is very hard to come by in today's era of college football. Just go take a look at the teams that remain in the hunt for a college football playoff spot.
Against Ole Miss on Saturday, Georgia's offense averaged 10 yards per play. Yes, the Bulldogs averaged a first down every time they snapped the ball against the Rebels. They have been so efficient on offense that Georgia is also getting to the red zone more than any other team in the country. They have 57 total attempts in that area of the field and are scoring 93 percent of the time. On the flip side, their defense has allowed the fifth-fewest red zone trips in the country.
The numbers aren't the only thing that makes the Bulldogs such a dangerous opponent though. They also gained back arguably the best player in college football in Brock Bowers against Ole Miss while also getting back their starting right tackle Amarius Mims. The Bulldogs have battled injuries since the start of the season, and they have some key pieces that are fully healthy now late in the year.
Last week, Georgia kicked off one of the toughest remaining schedules in the sport as they took on a top-15 Missouri team with Ole Miss the following week and Tennessee on the road right after that. Through two of those games, Georgia has outscored their opponents 82-38, they outgained Missouri and Ole Miss by a combined 281 total yards and have looked the part of a national title contender against two ranked opponents.
Georgia has all of the tools necessary to take it all the way this year. They have elite quarterback play, they have elite playmakers on offense, they can run the football when they want to and more importantly, they have a really good defense that can back up the offense when they need them to. This is something that not many college football playoff contenders can say for themselves.
The Bulldogs have one more major test remaining on the regular season schedule as they will travel to Tennessee this week and then will play Alabama in the SEC Championship, so we will get two more good tests for this Georgia team before the playoff. But 11 weeks into the season, it's the team in Athens, Georgia that is the most dangerous.
