Georgia Tech Offense Completely Silent In Embarrassing Loss to Wake Forest
After losing a second-half lead to NC State on Saturday, Georgia Tech was back at home with a tough test against Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons were fresh off of a 29-point win over Syracuse on Saturday and are a team that is on the NCAA Tournament Bubble. Georgia Tech is trying to find consistency and climb out of the bottom of the ACC standings, but tonight was going to be a tough test against one of the top scoring teams in college basketball.
What ended up happening was the most embarrassing loss of the season. While Georgia Tech has not been a great team this year, one thing you can say about them is that they have not been blown out in many games and have been competitive. The only games that resulted in a blowout before this was the losses to Cincinnati and Virginia Tech.
This was something on another planet. It did not look like the Georgia Tech team that has wins over Duke, North Carolina, Clemson, and Mississippi State. Damon Stoudamire is going to have to rally his team and move past this game.
With all of that being said, here is a brief recap of tonight's action.
Stoudamire stuck with his usual starting five tonight: Nait George, Miles Kelly, Kowacie Reeves, Baye Ndongo, and Ebenezer Dowuona.
Kevin Miller, Cameron Hildreth, Hunter Sallis, Andrew Carr, and Efton Reid started for Wake Forest.
This game started in the worst possible way for Georgia Tech.
After Reeves nailed the opening shot to take a 3-0 lead, Wake Forest went on a 13-3 run. Georgia Tech missed seven consevutive shots, while Wake hit their next five. It was only four and a half minutes in, but Georgia Tech already faced a double-digit deficit.
It would only get worse from there and in a really bad way.
Over the next ten minutes, Wake Forest would outscore Georgia Tech 29-2 and the Yellow Jackets would miss 17 straight field goals to fall behind 29-5.
No, that is not a typo.
The only points after the Reeves three was two free throws from Ibrahima Sacko and Georgia Tech would miss their next 21 field goal attempts. With 5:08 to go, Wake Forest led Georgia Tech 33-5 and the Yellow Jackets had only made one three.
Georgia Tech finally broke through the lid on the basket and hit three straight field goals to make it 40-13. Georgia Tech would somehow get to 20 points at the half, but trailed 46-20.
The first half numbers are something to behold. The Yellow Jackets shot 14% from the floor and 15% from three. They could not get anything to go in and Wake Forest is a below average team on defense, ranking in the bottom half of most major ACC categories.
Wake Forest shot 50% from the field and 30% from three in the first half.
The second half only saw the result widen and more of the same resulted. Georgia Tech could not buy a basket and even though Wake Forst had some struggles of its own to score, the Yellow Jackets could not make this a respectable game.
The Yellow Jackets went on to lose 80-51. They shot 28% from the field and 13% from three. Nait George (12) and Baye Ndongo (14) were the only Yellow Jackets in double figures
Saturday's game against last place Louisville is now a must win. If they lose, they are at risk of being the No. 25 seed in the ACC Tournament. The Cardinals have been bad all season, but do have wins over Miami and Florida State. Georgia Tech is in no place to take them lightly and after this performance, they might even be underdogs.
