Georgia Tech vs Howard: Start time, where to watch, game preview
The Damon Stoudamire era got off to a good start on Monday night when the Yellow Jackets defated Georgia Southern 84-62.
The Yellow Jackets offense came alive in the second half, especially Miles Kelly. For all of the struggles that Kelly had in the first half, he had a tremendous second half. Kelly scored 19 points in the second half, the Yellow Jackets shot 64.3% from three-point range in the second half and they outscored Georgia Southern 52-31 in the second half to get the win in Stoudamire's first game as the head coach.
Reeves finished with 15, Deebo Coleman had 13 in the second half to finish with 17 for the game, and Claude had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. The offense finished scoring 1.2 points per possession. For the game, Georgia Tech shot 45.0% from the field and 44.8 from three-point range.
Georgia Tech went with Miles Kelly, Kowacie Reeves, Amaree Abram, Tafara Gapare, and Tyzhaun Claude in the starting lineup against the Eagles. I would anticipate the same starting lineup tonight against Howard.
Howard is 1-0 this season after getting a 92-80 win in their opening game vs Hampton. Howard won the MEAC last season and made the NCAA Tournament as a 16 seed and lost in their opening game against Kansas. Howard was picked as the preseason favorite in the MEAC and had three players (Shy Odom, Marcus Dockery, and Jelani Williams).
Howard is one of five guaranteed non-conference opponents for Tech that won 20 or more games in the 2022-23 season, including four that played in the post-season. Mississippi State (21-13), Penn State (23-14) and Howard (22-13) all played in the NCAA Tournament last season, while Cincinnati (23-13), a new member of the Big 12, reached the quarterfinals of the NIT. UMass Lowell (26-8) finished second in the America East Conference. The Yellow Jackets potentially could play two more 20-win teams in the Diamond Head Classic, with a possible game against Hawai’i (21-11) in the second round and TCU (22-13) in the final round.
Georgia Tech and have met three times previously, winning all three times, most recently on Jan. 2, 1991 in a tight 84-77 decision at Alexander Memorial Coliseum.
In the KenPom Rankings, Georgia Tech is No. 102 while Howard is No. 227.
Tech is 35-0 all-time against members of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, and 53-2 against Division I HBCU programs. The Jackets have played, or at least scheduled, a team from either the MEAC or the Southwestern Athletic Conference every year since 2011-12.
