Three Takeaways From Georgia Tech's Loss to Virginia Tech
It was another tough night for Damon Stoudamire and Georgia Tech.
The Yellow Jackets went on the road to try and upset Virginia Tech, but instead, they were dominated from pretty much the first minute. The offense stagnated in the first half and Georgia Tech fell behind and could not catch up. Virginia Tech handed them their third straight loss and their eighth in the last nine games. Things are not going to get any easier either. No. 3 North Carolina comes to Atlanta on Tuesday and they are playing as well as any team in the country.
So what are the takeaways from tonight's game?
1. The first-half performance on offense put Georgia Tech in a hole
In a game that got as lopsided as this one, the first-half performance on offense stuck out to me. The Yellow Jackets were able to make a run and cut into the lead in the second half before finally being put away, but it could have been a more competitive game if not for the first half.
The numbers are pretty ugly all around. Georgia Tech shot 29% in the first half and 38% from three.
Carter Murphy and Tyzhaun Claude had six points each. Nait George had three points on 1-6 shooting and Kowacie Reeves was 0-5. Baye Ndongo would get going in the second half, but it was too little too late.
2. Virginia Tech was able to counter Georgia Tech's run in the second half
As bad as the first half went for Georgia Tech, they did make a run in the second and cut into the lead.
After trailing by 16 going into the half, Georgia Tech cut it to nine and the Hokies had gone nearly five minutes without scoring. It looked like Georgia Tech was going to get back in the game and possibly pull off the upset, but Virginia Tech did not let them do that. They went on an 11-0 run and the lead was back to 18 points. It was a great job by the Hokies to end any hopes that Georgia Tech had of coming back.
3. Georgia Tech Still Can't Figure Things Out
I will be the first to say that I still think Damon Stoudamire is going to do just fine at Georgia Tech given time, but that should not erase how tough this season has been and continues to be. There are games when the young talent like Ndongo and George shines and the future looks bright, but there are too many nights like tonight when there is just too much inconsistent play.
The defense has not been very good all season and Virginia Tech scored the most points in a matchup against Georgia Tech than they had in over a decade. This was the third straight loss and eighth in the last nine games. This is a young team with some talented players on the roster, but they can't seem to play the way that Stoudamire wants and that is ultimately on him.
