What Does ESPN's BPI Say About Georgia Tech's Matchup With Louisville?
Unless you are a fan of either team, you might not realize how big of a game that Georgia Tech vs Louisville is.
It does not have any implications for the NCAA Tournament or the bigger picture for the ACC, but it is a battle to avoid finishing in last place in the ACC standings.
Georgia Tech has more wins against possible NCAA Tournament teams than most other teams in the ACC but also can lose to just about anyone.
After the blowout loss to Wake Forest, Georgia Tech is trying to regroup and string together some wins before the end of the season.
Louisville started the season in embarrassing fashion and while they are still near the bottom of the ACC, they have been playing better and have some good wins against Miami and Florida State. Georgia Tech is in no position where they can assume that they are going to win just by showing up.
With that being said, what odds are being given to Georgia Tech to win this game?
ESPN's BPI is actually favoring the Yellow Jackets on the road tomorrow, even if it is just slightly. BPI is giving Georgia Tech a 54.2% chance to win tomorrow.
But what is BPI? Here is how ESPN describes it:
"The Basketball Power Index (BPI) is a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of performance going forward. BPI represents how many points above or below average a team is. Strength of Record (SOR) is a measure of team accomplishment based on how difficult a team's W-L record is to achieve. Game predictions account for opponent strength, pace of play, site, travel distance, day's rest and altitude, and are used to simulate the season 10,000 times to produce season projections. Numbers update daily."
If the Yellow Jackets want to win, they will have to play better than they have since beating North Carolina.
When asked about what he thought about Louisville, Georgia Tech head coach Damon Stoudamire said he is focusing on his own team and getting them right:
"You know this is probably not what you want to hear, but I am not really concerned with Louisville, not from the standpoint of basketball but I am concerned about myself and my own team so that is what we have to do. We have to lose ourselves in what Georgia Tech basketball is and what I want it to be and the standard that has to be set and right now, I just don't think we are in the space to be worrying about a scouting report of another team.
You know, we have to spring back in transition harder, we have to dive for loose balls, we have to rebound with two hands, we have to get in our defensive stance, we have to fill gaps, we gotta run three-point shooters off the line, we gotta slide with them and we gotta have somebody sink and fill.
So to be honest with you, (Louisville head coach) Kenny Payne is a good friend of mine and I respect him and I have watched Louisville but I am really more concerned with our effort and how we come out the gate. The game can't get strategic until we play hard. There is no need to emphasize the different things that Louisville might pose in terms of challenges because if we rebound the ball, which we have to do, again if we get back in transition, which we need to better and if we understand the scouting report and the personnel that we are guarding, we will put ourselves in a position to have a chance to win."
Georgia Tech vs Louisville tips off at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow evening.
