Charlie Johnston had a stellar junior season for the Moody Blue Devils (AL) throwing for 2,710 yards and 32 touchdowns. One of the best parts of his game is his deep ball. He was throwing dimes out there to wide receivers. After having a good showing at the Under Armour Camp here in Atlanta, here are some things he said wants to work on:

“I want to speed up my footwork and work with my new guys. I want to develop these younger guys to become better. We are going to be working on timing on the field. Getting out there and throwing a lot,” said Johnston.

In terms of his recruiting, several programs have been contacting Charlie Johnston a lot, including major D1 programs and FCS schools. Here are the schools he said have been contacting him the most throughout the recruiting process.

“I’ve been talking to Duke and Georgia Tech a good bit. Those are the schools that are the most interested. Plus the schools I have been offered from FCS wise. I’ve enjoyed building those connections and building relationships with the coaches,” said Johnston.

This is what he had to say about Indiana and Duke.

“Indiana with their new coaching staff coming over I feel like they are in the rebuilding stage. I would love to go there. I feel like it is a great school academically.”

I feel like Duke is a good school academically. I like the coaches over there coming from SMU. I think those are two great schools.

Johnston enjoys the relationship he has been building with the coaching staff, specifically QB coach Chris Weinke.

“I feel like I can relate to Coach Weinke. Size-wise he is big and I am big. We are both tall people. I feel like we speak the same language when I am there. It’s all about building relationships and I have enjoyed the campus,” said Johnston.

He took a visit to the flats back in January and enjoyed what he saw. Like all the top recruits that have visited Georgia Tech North Carolina upset remains ingrained in their memory, and something they enjoy about the Yellow Jackets.

“I went to visit a couple of weeks ago. It was awesome to see, and I love their facilities. They have a really nice indoor and the practice field is super nice. I went there for the North Carolina game and I enjoyed it. The atmosphere was crazy. The upset, there is nothing else like it. I feel like in terms of that feeling I haven’t experienced an upset like that. I enjoyed getting to see that,” said Johnston.

Johnston also talked very highly of the scheme that the Yellow Jackets run and how it resembles some of the same terminology and plays that he runs at Moody.

“I really like what their offense is doing, especially with Haynes King last year. I saw a lot of stuff that our offense does at Moody. I can look at one of their plays and tell you. We run some of the same stuff they do. I feel like I would fit really well into it. That is the same with these other schools. I feel like some of their offenses I can really relate to. I like what they are doing at Georgia Tech,” said Johnston.

Last season Johnston led Moody to a 10-3 record and the quarterfinals and has his eyes set on making a deeper run. I think what is most impressive is that Johnston doesn’t care about individual accolades. I probed twice about his individual goals and he kept coming back to his teammates and wanting to accomplish something bigger than himself.

“I think it is going to be a great year for us. We have our eyes on the Blue Map. We have to start out right with Gainesville. We are going to be ready for that game on Thursday at 7:00 pm. It’s going to be really exciting to play against them. Good competition. I am looking forward to it. I think we will be ready for it.

In my opinion, Johnston just fits the Georgia Tech culture. He is the ideal archetype at 6’5 with a strong arm. Johnston is one of those guys who you want leading and being the face of your program. How he carries himself, the leader that he is, and the intangibles that he has are all exemplary.
