ESPN Ranks Georgia Tech vs North Carolina as One Of The Top 25 Games Of The 2023 Season

Georgia Tech pulled off a huge upset against North Carolina yet again in 2023

Georgia Tech was a double-digit underdog at home against North Carolina in October but by the end of the night, Georgia Tech had pulled the upset and it was a huge night for Yellow Jackets quarterback Haynes King. 

"King accounted for 377 yards of total offense and four touchdowns to lead Georgia Tech to a 46-42 win over No. 17 North Carolina. The Yellow Jackets’ quarterback completed 23-of-30 passes for 287 yards and four touchdowns. He also rushed eight times for 90 yards, including a 52-yard run in the fourth quarter that set up his game-winning five-yard touchdown pass to tight end Brett Seither with 4:28 to go in the ballgame. King led Georgia Tech to scores on seven of its final nine possessions of the game (not including a kneel-down at the end), including three straight touchdown drives of 75 yards or more in the fourth quarter. His 377 yards of total offense were the 11th-most in Georgia Tech history, while his 76.7 completion percentage was the second-highest in school history for a passer with at least 30 attempts. King became the second quarterback in Tech history to throw at least four touchdown passes three times in a season, joining Joe Hamilton in 1999, who did it three times en route to finishing second in voting for the Heisman Trophy that year. The game was one of the best of the 2023 season and today, ESPN analyst Bill Connelly ranked the game between Georgia Tech and North Carolina as the No. 23 game of the season: 

"At first. The Heels took a 21-7 lead over Georgia Tech early in the second quarter and still led 35-24 heading into the fourth but once again crumpled late. Dontae Smith's 70-yard touchdown brought the Yellow Jackets within three points, and Haynes King's 5-yard touchdown pass to Brett Seither gave them the lead. And once again a late turnover -- this time a Tez Walker fumble -- sealed the deal. From 6-0, UNC finished just 8-5."

It was a huge win for the Yellow Jackets and helped them clinch a bowl game for the first time since 2018 and a winning season. 

The two teams face off in Chapel Hill next year and there is going to be a new twist to the rivalry. Former Georgia Tech head coach Geoff Collins is now the defensive coordinator for North Carolina. The game will take place on Oct. 12th.
