Georgia Tech Football Midseason Report Card: Wide Receiver
Going into this season, I was optimistic that Georgia Tech had upgraded its wide receiver room and that they had added enough explosion on the outside. Through the first six games, I do think this has been an upgraded room and it is in large part due to an emerging true freshman and four impactful transfers.
The passing game has arguably been the best part of the team. Georgia Tech is third in the ACC in passing yards per game, averaging 275 yards per game.
True freshman Eric Singleton Jr. leads the Yellow Jackets in receiving with 355 yards on 20 catches and he has five touchdowns this season, averaging nearly 18 yards per catch. He is currently seventh in the ACC in receiving yards and second in touchdowns. He has given this team much-needed speed at the position and looks like a future superstar. Singleton is the second-highest-graded player on the Georgia Tech offense according to PFF and has a 73.7 grade.
Malik Rutherford is the only Yellow Jackets receiver who was on last year's team who is making an impact in 2023. The speedster leads the Yellow Jackets in receptions with 25 and he has 290 yards and one touchdown, averaging 11.6 yards per catch. I would like to see Rutherford involved more in the deep passing game, but he has been a reliable target for quarterback Haynes King and came up with a huge catch in the comeback against Miami. Rutherford has a 65.3 grade on PFF.
Georgia Tech took four transfers at the wide receiver position and Georgia transfer Dominick Blaylock is the leader amongst the four. He has 14 catches for 228 yards and one touchdown and is averaging over 16 yards per catch. He has had a strong last two games, including going over 100 yards in the loss to Bowling Green. He seems to be building chemistry with King and could have a big second half of the season. Blaylock has a 65.9 grade on PFF.
Christian Leary is not going to be able to top catching the game-winning touchdown against Miami, but that is just the highlight of what has been a solid first half of the season for the Alabama transfer. Leary has 13 catches for 187 yards and two touchdowns while averaging 14.4 yards per catch. Leary has a 73.0 grade on PFF.
One guy that I am excited to watch in the second half of the season is Chase Lane, who has missed the last four games with an injury. Lane has six catches for 105 yards and one touchdown in two games this season and head coach Brent Key expects him to be ready next week against Boston College.
Duquesne transfer Abdul Janneh has two touchdown catches and 104 yards this season and has made plays when he has been in. He provides good depth to this position.
This was a position of weakness a year ago for Georgia Tech, but they have depth there this year and an emerging star in Singleton. Give a lot of credit to wide receivers coach Josh Crawford and his development of this group so far this season.
