Georgia Tech Football Transfer Profile: Defensive Back Syeed Gibbs
Each season, there are impact players at the FCS level of college football who make the jump up to the FBS level through the transfer portal and this offseason, Georgia Tech went out and got one of those players.
Syeed Gibbs had multiple Power Five offers when he entered the transfer portal, but he chose to come to Georgia Tech and I think he has a chance to be a high-level impact player.
At 6'0 180 LBS, I think that Gibbs could play either on the outside or at nickel, which are both positions where Georgia Tech lost some players this offseason. Myles Sims was out of eligibility, Kenan Johnson transferred to Utah, and starting nickel K.J. Wallace transferred to UCLA. Players like Ahmari Harvey and Rodney Shelley are back, but the Yellow Jackets could have used one or two more experienced cornerbacks to help solidify the secondary.
Gibbs totaled 52 tackles, three tackles for loss, six pass breakups, and three interceptions last season and he has three years of eligibility remaining.
Four-Star Cornerback Tae Harris Will Take An Official Visit to Georgia Tech in June
From his bio at Georgia Tech Athletics:
"Attended Rhode Island from 2022-23 … Named NCAA Division I FBS freshman all-America in 2023 … 2023 Jerry Rice Award Watch List (FBS Freshman of the Year) … Appeared in 10 games as a redshirt freshman in 2023, recording 52 tackles (35 solo) and 3.0 tackles for loss … Totaled three interceptions and six passes defended overall … Allowed just one touchdown against him in 52 passing targets … Tallied six solo tackles in the season-opener at Georgia State (Aug. 31) … Also had six stops at Maine (Sept. 15) … Hauled in his first interception on the season against Bryant (Sept. 30) to go along with three tackles … Recorded a season-high nine tackles, two for loss, and a career-high two interceptions at Brown (Oct. 7) … Finished with seven tackles and 1.0 tackles for loss against New Hampshire (Oct. 28) … Redshirted in 2022, appearing in four games on special teams … Had one special teams tackle at Pitt (Sept. 24) … Made his collegiate debut and had one special teams tackle at Bryant (Sept. 10)."
I think it is possible that Georgia Tech got an ascending talent in Gibbs. He looks like he might have his best football in front of him and I expect him to be able to compete to be a starter this season or provide quality depth and be a key special teams player. Georgia Tech's defense needed new talent this offseason and I like the addition of Gibbs to be able to do that. I will be following his progression closely this spring.
