Georgia Tech Kicker Aidan Birr talks about what he is working to improve ahead of 2024 and his goals for the year
Georiga Tech was back on the field yesterday for spring practice after a week off for spring break. After practice, it was the special team's day to speak to the media, and among that group was kicker Aidan Birr. Birr took over as the kicker last season and did a phenomenal job. He is going to be one of the best-returning kickers in the ACC and should make Georgia Tech one of the most reliable special teams units this season.
Here is everything from Birr on Monday:
1. On why he changed his number...
"Well I have a kicking coach back home, he wore 33 in college and Coach Key asked me, he was like, "Do you want to change your number?" Kind of in December and I was like, "Yeah, like you know, 93 is cool, but I'll take your number." 33 that's a good number and it's the most threes you can get in a number so I was like it works because I can't you know I just kick field goes three points."
2. On what he is working on this spring...
"Just a lot of work with Henry and David getting the operation sound you know, kickoffs have been big for me this year the legs speed just working on all that trying to you know have a even better year next year"
3. On having Ricky Brumfield back as the special teams coach...
"It is really nice because I mean just you don't have to worry about anything new you know I guess I haven't had a lot of different special team coordinators only being here for two years, but Coach Brumfield's really good. Kind of lets us do what we're trying to do. He's not trying to overanalyze everything, so it's really nice having him."
4. On how nice it was that the coaches stuck with him last year...
"Yeah I mean it it was a tough year because you know my senior year had appendicitis that took me out for the end of that year and then coming in tearing my ACL you know I'm thinking they're probably gonna let me go but just them sticking with me and you know giving me a chance in that South Carolina State game just it shows it was just a good feeling, you know, they really do care about you here and it's a good feeling."
5. On how many kicks he wants to make this year...
"I mean, as many times they send me out there, I want to make them, obviously break the record here. That's a goal. I'm not sure what the longest is here... I get something above 55 and can break that. That would be nice. "
6. On if he watches Harrison Butker...
"I mean, I watch all the NFL kickers, but Harrison Bucker, I mean he's just a beast. Like over the summer, you know, he comes back here and kicks, I mean it's just like a, it's like a sledgehammer hitting the ball. I mean he's, his kickoffs are going in the stands and all that, and when he comes back, I just go out there and watch, I don't try to bother him, and it's nice to see like a guy like that, like, you know, he was in my position a couple years ago."
