Georgia Tech vs Miami: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
It was a stunning image seeing Georgia Tech quarterback Haynes King find Christian Leary for a touchdown with a second remaining and the Yellow Jackets coming away with an improbable victory. Miami just had to kneel the ball down and the game would have been over, but they chose to run the ball and fumbled it away to Georgia Tech, who took full advantage.
This was a great performance after the embarrassment that happened against Bowling Green the week before. Brent Key got his team team refocused and they took down the No. 17 team in the country in the process.
So what are the good, the bad, and the ugly takeaways from this game?
The Good
- A WIN. Winning is always the most important thing and while winning in this fashion was quite unexpected, it still counts and it has to be uplifting to a team that had just lost to Bowling Green.
- The defense picked off Miami quarterback Tyler Van Dyke three times and he was playing like one of the best quarterbacks in the country coming into this game. With Kevin Sherrer taking over at defensive coordinator, this team looked more confident on that side of the ball
- LaMiles Brooks getting an interception in the end zone.
- Jaylon King notched eight tackles and an interception
- The run defense has been one of the worst in the nation, but they held up against a powerful Miami ground game. Georgia Tech limited Miami to 165 yards rushing and 3.5 yards per rush.
- Clayton Powell-Lee had eight tackles and the talented safety trio for Georgia Tech had a pretty good game against Miami
- Aidan Birr was 1-1 on field goal attempts
- The entire final drive by the offense will be remembered by any player, coach or fan forever. It was great and worked out perfectly.
- Georgia Tech got five tackles for loss
- The touchdown run by Jamal Haynes showed a great level of effort from him and he continued to have a solid season.
- 16 Points off turnovers
The Bad
- The offense squandered some red zone opportunities and as a whole, they could not move the ball and were set up well by the defense creating turnovers.
- The offense only gained 250 yards in the game and a lot of that came on the final drive to win the game.
- The running game struggled to get anything going. The Yellow Jackets only rushed for 99 yards and averaged less than four yards per carry.
- The offensive line struggled all game with Miami's defensive line.
- The Offense was 5-13 on third downs.
The Ugly
- Averaging only 5.8 yards per pass attempt is ugly
- 4.7 yards per play on offense
- 11 penalties. This team has had three games in a row where they were had in that aspect of the game
