What are Some Positions Georgia Tech Might Target in the Transfer Portal?

Where might Georgia Tech look to add players this offseason?

Georgia Tech will be waiting to see where they go for thier first bowl game since 2018, but until then, the focuses will be on the transfer portal and high school recruiting.

As of right now, Georgia Tech has not had any player declare that they will be entering the portal, but that could certainly change. We are still in the early stages of the first transfer portal window, which opens next Monday and players will have plenty of time to get in.

With that in mind, what could be some position for Georgia Tech to target when the portal officially opens up? Let's take a look at a few spots.

Note: this is just speculation on what COULD happen, not reporting.

1. Linebacker

LB Paul Moala Tackles Jaxson Dart

Paul Moala was a starter for Georgia Tech this season

I would not be surprised to see Georgia Tech attack this position in the transfer portal. Paul Moala, Braelen Oliver, and Andre White will not be back next season and were seniors. Moala was a starter for Georgia Tech and did some good things this year and both White and Oliver were rotational players.

That being said, this was arguably the weakest position on the defense. Not only did Georgia Tech have the worst rushing defense in the ACC, but one of the worst in the country and a reason for that was subpar linebacker play.

The Yellow Jackets have young players like Kyle Efford that played well down the stretch and Trenilyas Tatum still has eligibility. I am high on the freshmen Ashton Heflin, Jacob Cruz, and Nacari Ashley, but Georgia Tech could use some proven veterans at the position.

2. Defensive line

Zaylin Wood

Georgia Tech offered MTSU transfer Zaylin Wood

This is one spot where Georgia Tech has already offered one transfer.

The Yellow Jackets offered Middle Tennessee graduate transfer defensive end Zaylin Wood last night and he has one year of eligibility remaining.

Wood played his high school football in the state of Georgia at Heard County High School and he has one year of eligibility remaining. He played four seasons for the Blue Raiders and totaled 10 sacks during his time there. He had 6.5 sacks in 2022 and three this season. He was a All Conference USA honorable mention in 2022.

His best performance in 2022 came in perhaps the biggest win in MTSU history. Wood collected two sacks, 2.0 TFLs, a fumble recovery, and an interception he returned 15 yards for a touchdown in the win at Miami.

Like linebacker, Georgia Tech has to get better play out of its defensive line next season if they want to improve as a defense. Watch for more defensive line offers.

3. Tight End

Georgia Tech is going to be losing two of their top tight ends from this season with Dylan Leonard and Luke Benson out of eligibility. Brett Seither was solid this season and they brought on Jackson Long as a young transfer last season, but they could use some more bodies at the position with experience.

There could be plenty to change in the next few weeks if guys enter the portal, so be sure to stay tuned right here for the latest.
