The United States men's national team tipped off the 2023 FIBA World Cup against New Zealand on Saturday in Manila, Philippines with a 99-72 victory.

The road gets tougher on Monday with a 5:40 a.m. PT matchup against Greece. Team USA beat Greece in an exhibition matchup last week, but they struggled to take care of the ball and keep Greece off the offensive glass.

Greece is No. 9 in the FIBA rankings and will likely be the USA's toughest competition in group-stage play. Greece beat Jordan 92-71 in its opener.

Gonzaga men's basketball head coach Mark Few is an assistant on Team USA, joining USA head coach and Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr, Miami Heat coach Coach Erik Spoelstra and Clippers coach Tyronn Lue.

The assistant coaches are splitting scouting responsibilities during the tournament. Few prepared the report for the New Zealand game, Lue will do it for the Greece game on Monday and Spoelstra has it for the Jordan game on Wednesday.

After having helped prepare the gold medalist team at the 2021 Tokyo Games, Few returns to help Team USA avenge its disappointing finish at the 2019 FIBA World Cup. Losses to France and Serbia marked the Americans' first loss in the FIBA World Cup since 2006, which snapped a streak of three straight gold medal finishes at the tournament. Arguably its worst showing on the international stage ever, Team USA now has a chance to become the only country with six FIBA World Cup titles.

The 12-man squad includes Paolo Banchero (Orlando Magic), Mikal Bridges (Brooklyn Nets), Jalen Brunson (New York Knicks), Anthony Edwards (Minnesota Timberwolves), Tyrese Haliburton (Indiana Pacers), Josh Hart (Knicks), Brandon Ingram (New Orleans Pelicans), Jaren Jackson Jr. (Memphis Grizzlies), Cameron Johnson (Brooklyn Nets), Walker Kessler (Utah Jazz), Bobby Portis (Milwaukee Bucks) and Austin Reaves (Los Angeles Lakers).
