Gonzaga big man Efton Reid transfers to Wake Forest
Another Gonzaga men's basketball player is heading to Wake Forest.
Just over a week after Hunter Sallis announced his commitment to Wake Forest, former Gonzaga big man Efton Reid transferred to the Demon Deacons.
A former five-star recruit in the 2021 class, Reid initially committed to LSU out of high school. As a freshman, he averaged 6.3 points and 4.3 rebounds, and was the only LSU player to start all 34 games during the 2021-22 season. After LSU head coach Will Wade was fired last March, Reid transferred to Gonzaga.
Reid, a 7-foot center, struggled to crack Mark Few's rotation this past season. He averaged 2.1 points and 1.0 rebounds while playing 4.6 minutes per game for the Zags. Reid's role was diminished as the third option behind Ben Gregg, Drew Timme and Anton Watson.
After a strong showing against North Florida in the season opener, Reid's low-post scoring and defensive presence were utilized sparingly. He scored a season-high 16 points on a perfect 8-for-8 shooting against Eastern Oregon, but since then, he appeared in 13 of Gonzaga's final 23 games.
Reid's eligibility as a two-time transfer remains uncertain. Per NCAA rules, two-time transfers are required to sit out a year. Reid will have to receive a waiver in order to play for Wake Forest during the 2023-24 season.
Following Reid's commitment, Wake Forest's transfer portal ranking rose from No. 7 to No. 1. Along with the pair of former Zags, Steve Forbes also landed former Central Michigan guard Kevin Miller, who only appeared in four games back in November and missed the remainder of the season due to a foot injury.
