Let the real games begin.

After a closed-door scrimmage and exhibition match, Gonzaga men's basketball is officially ready to tip off the 2023-24 college basketball season.

Unlike previous home openers, though, the Zags aren't expecting to come out with an easy victory against the Yale Bulldogs, who were picked to win the Ivy League after sharing the regular season title last season. Head coach James Jones returns four of his five starters, headlined by Matt Knowling, a unanimous first team All-Ivy selection who averaged a team-high 13.6 points on 62.5% shooting. Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year Bez Mbeng is also back, along with sharpshooter August Mahoney, who shot a conference-best 46.7% from beyond the arc.

For Gonzaga, Mark Few's program doesn't boast the continuity Yale does, but the talent is certainly there. Ryan Nembhard, Graham Ike and Anton Watson are early candidates for national awards at their respective positions and all were named to the preseason All-WCC team heading into the season. Nembhard and Ike had a strong showing in their unofficial debuts in last week's exhibition bout against Lewis-Clark State, as Ike led with 24 points on 11-for-13 shooting while Nembhard dished out 10 assists in 23 minutes.

Gonzaga won't have the services of Eastern Washington transfer Steele Venters, who will be out for the season with a knee injury. Yale will be without 6-foot-4 guard Jeannot Basima, who is out indefinitely with a knee injury.
