How to watch Gonzaga vs. Purdue in 2024 NCAA Tournament: Live stream, TV channel for Sweet 16 game
The 5-seed Gonzaga Bulldogs take on the 1-seed Purdue Boilermakers in the Sweet 16 round of the 2024 NCAA Tournament in Detroit, Michigan on Friday.
The third meeting in 16 months between Mark Few and Matt Painter was set up following dominant performances in their respective second-round matchups. The Zags (27-7, 14-2 WCC) rode a 32-4 scoring run in the second half to rout 4-seed Kansas, 89-68, on Saturday. The following day the Boilermakers hammered 8-seed Utah State, 107-67, behind 23 points and 14 rebounds from Zach Edey.
Purdue’s 7-foot-4 All-American has been a thorn in Gonzaga’s side over the past two seasons. Edey dropped 23 points, seven rebounds and had three blocks in an 84-66 win over the Bulldogs at the PK85 in 2022. A year later, he put up 25 points, 14 rebounds and another three blocks in a 73-63 victory at the Maui invitational.
But Gonzaga isn’t the same team since that matchup in Hawaii. The offense has been one of the best in the country with Ben Gregg in the starting lineup, while newcomers Ryan Nembhard and Graham Ike have formed quite the connection in the pick-and-roll game as the season progressed. Nolan Hickman, Anton Watson and Gregg have adapted to their respective roles while Braden Huff and Dusty Stromer figured out their place as sparks off the bench.
The collective growth over the last six months has culminated into the program’s ninth-straight appearance in the Sweet 16, the longest active streak in the nation. A win against the No. 1 seed in the Midwest would result in a second-straight appearance in the Elite 8 and the sixth overall since 2015. Just about a month ago it seemed unlikely either of those would be possibilities based on the national media’s outlook of the Zags. But here they are once again.
For Purdue, it’s seeking its third Elite 8 appearance since 2000 after having been bounced by double-digit seeds in the last three NCAA Tournaments (16-seed Fairleigh Dickinson in 2023, 15-seed Saint Peter’s in 2022 and 13-seed North Texas in 2021). The Boilermakers are 7-0 this season against the rest of the teams left in the Sweet 16.
The winner of Friday’s game takes on either 3-seed Creighton or 2-seed Tennessee in the Midwest Regional Final on Sunday.
