Santa Clara will look to improve to 2-0 in conference play while Pepperdine chases its first WCC victory of the season when the two teams face off in Malibu Saturday night.

Santa Clara (10-6, 1-0 WCC) picked up the win in its first league matchup of the season with a 68-57 defeat of LMU on Thursday. 

Four players finished in double figures, but it was the Broncos' defense that was the story of the night. 

After LMU jumped out to an 8-0 lead, Santa Clara buckled down and held the Lions to just 29.8 percent shooting from the field and an abysmal 18.2 percent from three-point range. 

A strong defensive effort is nothing new for the Broncos, as this game marked the seventh time this season they've held their opponent to under 37 percent shooting. 

Pepperdine (7-9, 0-1 WCC) struggled in its 86-60 WCC opener loss to Gonzaga on Thursday. 

Despite a slow start to the season, the Waves have the top two scorers in the WCC right now. 

Junior college transfer Michael Ajayi currently leads the WCC in scoring with 17.1 points per game, while teammate Houston Mallette holds down the second spot at 16.6 ppg. 

Ajayi also has the second-most rebounds in the WCC with 9.8 rpg, and has the third-most double-doubles in the nation with nine so far this season.  

Santa Clara has won this matchup the last three times these two teams have met.
