Conference play gets underway as Saint Mary's takes on San Diego in the WCC opener

This week marks the start of conference play as Saint Mary's and San Diego face off in the WCC opener on Thursday (January 4). 

It will be the 96th all-time meeting between the two programs, with Saint Mary's owning a 59-36 advantage in the series.

Saint Mary's (9-6) enters conference play with the fourth-best record in the WCC trailing San Francisco, Gonzaga and San Diego. 

The Gaels are coming off a 66-46 victory over Kent State last week that saw both Alex Ducas and Luke Barrett log career games. 

Ducas, a fifth-year senior, registered his first career double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds, while Barrett tallied a career-high 19 points on 7-9 shooting to earn his first-ever WCC Player of the Week honors. 

Sophomore Aidan Mahaney leads the Gaels in scoring this year, averaging nearly 13 points per game. 

San Diego (10-5) is off to a hot start this season and could match its win total from last year (11) with a win over Saint Mary's Thursday night. 

The Toreros will look to continue their dominance at Jenny Craig Pavilion after winning nine of their first 10 home games this season.

They have been a team of comeback kids this season, rallying for a win after trailing by double digits in five of their games this year.

Junior guard Wayne McKinney III is averaging a team-high 14.6 ppg and has shared the load with Deuce Tanner and PJ Hayes, who are both also averaging double-digit scoring numbers.
